A category shows a lock and “Allow…”

Mac App Store apps can only look in folders you allow. Press Allow… on the row, or open Settings → Folders, and macOS asks you to confirm the folder in its own window. Leave the folder it opens on selected and press Allow Access. Removing a folder there stops it being scanned straight away.

Paying, the free trial, and restoring a purchase

Settings → Purchase has two buttons. Try Free for 7 daysstarts the yearly subscription's trial through your Apple Account; you are charged €19.99 a year only if you do not cancel before it ends. Buy Once costs €39.99, never renews, and unlocks cleaning for good. On a second Mac, or after reinstalling, pressRestore Purchases there.

Cancelling, or asking for a refund

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. If you bought once while subscribed, cancel the subscription: you no longer need it. Cancel in the App Store → your account → Subscriptions, at least a day before it renews. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com; we cannot issue them.

Something I cleaned, I wanted back

Your own files — anything from Review or Move to Backup, and folders you added — go to the Trash, so open the Trash in the Dock and choose Put Back. Caches and build data are deleted rather than trashed, because the apps that made them rebuild them on their own.

It says there is less to clean than System Settings shows

System Settings counts “System Data” that belongs to macOS itself, which no App Store app may open. What each version covers explains the difference.
