Looking for a MacKeeper alternative?

RefreshYourMac does the cleaning part of MacKeeper — caches, logs, unused apps, large files, duplicates — plus the developer files MacKeeper skips, for $24.99 once with no account. It has no VPN, no antivirus and no one-click fix, on purpose.

Why people look for one

Usually the subscription. MacKeeper has no one-time purchase: on 3 November 2026 its own pricing page, read from Ireland, offered €71.40 for the first year on one Mac (shown against a €119.40 list price), €89.40 for three Macs, or €10.95 a month. The other common reasons are the account and activation code, and a Find & Fix button that fixes everything it found in one click.

Much of that price pays for things a cleaner does not do: a VPN, real-time antivirus, breach monitoring for your email accounts and round-the-clock chat support. If you only wanted the disk space back, you are paying for the rest every year.

Where RefreshYourMac differs

  • Pay $24.99 once and keep it, or $14.99 a year if you would rather. Either costs less than MacKeeper's first year on one Mac.
  • No account, no activation code. You download it and use it; the scan stays on your Mac and nothing about your files is sent anywhere.
  • Every category says how safe it is to remove. There are four safety levels, and the level limits what each button can do: caches can be cleared in bulk, your own documents never can.
  • Nothing selected until you ask. Instead of one button that fixes everything, you see what each category holds and clean it yourself.
  • Developer and AI tool files. Xcode DerivedData, simulator runtimes, node_modules, Gradle and Homebrew caches, and the build trees AI coding tools leave behind. MacKeeper's feature pages listed none of those on 27 October 2026.
  • No background agent. It is a menu bar app and nothing else; quit it and nothing of it keeps running.

What it deliberately leaves out

A malware scanner, because macOS already runs one; the app reads out its version and date instead (malware protection). A memory cleaner, because it frees memory macOS reads straight back — the measurement is on does purging RAM help. A VPN and breach monitoring, which are services with running costs, not features of a cleaner.

When MacKeeper is the better choice

  • You want a VPN, real-time antivirus and breach alerts in the same subscription as the cleaner.
  • You want 24/7 chat support from a person.
  • You want similar photos, such as bursts and near matches, found for you. RefreshYourMac only spots the same picture saved twice.

If you are removing MacKeeper first

MacKeeper's own uninstall guide covers each version. For the current one, version 7: quit MacKeeper from its menu in the menu bar (closing the window is not enough), move it from Applications to the Trash, confirm with Touch ID or your password, and click Allow when its uninstaller asks. Then restart, and check ~/Library/Application Support and ~/Library/LaunchAgents for anything still named MacKeeper. For leftovers of other apps, see uninstalling apps completely.
