What RefreshYourMac measures

Can I delete log files on my Mac?

Yes. Your own logs, crash reports included, are only needed when you are chasing a bug. Apps write new ones as they run, so clearing them frees space for a while rather than for good.

What it is

Log files used for debugging and diagnostics. Your own logs in ~/Library/Logs, including crash reports. Only needed when you are chasing a bug.

Where it is on your Mac

  • ~/Library/Logs

The ~ is your home folder. In Finder, Go → Go to Folder… opens any of these.

Is it safe to delete?

Safe for auto removal. Regenerates on its own. Nothing of value is lost.

What each of the four levels allows.

Doing it yourself

  1. In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder… and enter ~/Library/Logs.
  2. Select what you no longer need and move it to the Trash.
  3. Empty the Trash to get the space back.

What RefreshYourMac does with it

Rated Safe for auto removal. Clean removes it, and Clean All Safe includes it.

A scheduled clean may include it if you leave it switched on.

Both editions measure it: the download, and the Mac App Store edition once you allow the folder it lives in. In the app it is under Logs.
