What RefreshYourMac measures
Can I delete the Application Support folder on my Mac?
Not as a whole. For many apps it holds their actual data, settings and licences, not a copy of them. Remove a folder only when you know which app owns it and you no longer use it, or uninstall the app, which takes its folder with it.
What it is
Core data and settings for user apps. Shown for its size only — RefreshYourMac never deletes it. Settings, databases, licences and downloads for your apps — for many of them this IS the data, not a copy of it, and a folder here is rarely named after the app that owns it. Emptying one can lose work that has no other copy and no undo beyond the Trash. The safe ways to shrink it are all elsewhere: uninstall the app through Unused Applications, which removes its folder with it; or use the narrower categories that own a slice of this one, such as Claude Desktop Caches and Codex Sessions & Plugins.
Where it is on your Mac
~/Library/Application Support
The ~ is your home folder. In Finder, Go → Go to Folder… opens any of these.
Is it safe to delete?
Protected. Cannot be deleted here. It shows you what to do instead.
What each of the four levels allows.
Doing it yourself
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder… and enter ~/Library/Application Support.
- Find the folder of an app you have stopped using. Its name is often the developer's, not the app's.
- Uninstall the app, or move only that folder to the Trash.
What RefreshYourMac does with it
Rated Protected. RefreshYourMac measures it and shows its size, and never deletes it, however you ask.
What it tells you to do instead: Open ~/Library/Application Support in Finder to see what is there. Remove a folder only when you know which app owns it and you no longer use that app — or uninstall the app from Unused Applications, which takes its folder with it.
The download edition measures it; the Mac App Store edition does not include it. In the app it is under Apps & App Data.
