What RefreshYourMac measures
Is it safe to delete the Google Chrome cache on a Mac?
Yes. It holds copies of web pages, images and scripts that Chrome downloads again as you browse. Your passwords, sign-ins, history and bookmarks are kept elsewhere and are not touched.
What it is
Web page cache for Chrome and other Google apps. Temporary copies of web pages, images and scripts. Your passwords, sign-ins, history and bookmarks are stored elsewhere (see Google Chrome Passwords & Sign-ins) and are not affected. Quit Chrome before cleaning; pages load a little slower the first time afterwards.
Where it is on your Mac
~/Library/Caches/Google
The ~ is your home folder. In Finder, Go → Go to Folder… opens any of these.
Is it safe to delete?
Safe for auto removal. Regenerates on its own. Nothing of value is lost.
What each of the four levels allows.
Doing it yourself
- In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data.
- Choose All time, tick only Cached images and files, and click Delete data.
Leave Cookies and other site data unticked unless you mean to be signed out of websites.
What RefreshYourMac does with it
Rated Safe for auto removal. Clean removes it, and Clean All Safe includes it.
A scheduled clean may include it if you leave it switched on. While Google Chrome is open, a scheduled clean leaves it alone; a clean you start yourself is never blocked.
Both editions measure it: the download, and the Mac App Store edition once you allow the folder it lives in. In the app it is under Caches & Temporary Files.
